Chris Lyter, Fine Artist

1969–2021

Chris Lyter was a contemporary artist from the Appalachian region of south central Pennsylvania. Using palette knife and brush on canvas, Chris employed dynamic color and divergent values applied with a combination of smooth, refined brushstrokes and contrasting areas of thick, textured impasto to produce immersive, three-dimensional works of art. Each of his paintings challenges one to look past the obvious and to open the mind.

Chris once explained his art practice in the following words: “Creating abstract art opens my mind. The process is free-flowing and natural, allowing me to follow the painting as it evolves rather than attempt to adhere to a preconceived notion of the end result. I often only have a vague idea of the color palette and composition when I begin a painting, and, at times, end up with something vastly different from what I may have initially imagined. This, to me, is the adventure of abstraction. The process forces spontaneity. The painting can become a reflection of the thoughts, emotions, and the mood I experience while I work.

Some of my paintings are abstract representations of recognizable areas such as a landscape, seascape or the sky. Others are pure abstraction composed of seemingly random shapes, lines, forms and colors. All attempt to convey depth beyond simple paint on canvas. They are an exploration of the less obvious; some dreamlike and ethereal, others bold and energetic. For me each painting represents an escape from the usual and mundane, into an alternate reality. They cause me to question, wonder, and think.”
